The Bible is the central literary and sacramental pillar of Christian life. For Catholic believers, the biblical canon comprises 73 books (46 in the Old Testament, including the deuterocanonical texts, and 27 in the New Testament), affirmed definitively at the Council of Rome (382 AD), Council of Hippo (393 AD), and Council of Trent (1546 AD). Choosing an authoritative translation involves understanding the fundamental distinction between formal equivalence (‘word-for-word’ translations such as the RSV-CE, Douay-Rheims, and ESV-CE) and dynamic equivalence (‘thought-for-thought’ renderings such as the NABRE and Jerusalem Bible).
In parish liturgy, readability and typography carry spiritual significance. Lectors and celebrants rely on large-print lectionary formats to ensure error-free proclamation from the ambo. Meanwhile, private devotional readers select compact or study editions equipped with cross-references, patristic commentary, and liturgical concordances to cultivate daily lectio divina—the monastic practice of prayerful scriptural meditation.
As sacred texts age, handling and preservation require intentional stewardship. Bibles contain the consecrated names of God and apostolic teachings; hence, Christians across traditions treat damaged volumes with veneration. Catholic guidelines discourage placing worn Bibles in mundane recycling; instead, donation to outreach ministries or ceremonial burial preserves the sacred dignity of God’s revealed Word.
| Translation Edition | Methodological Philosophy | Primary Liturgical / Devotional Use |
|---|---|---|
| RSV-CE / ESV-CE | Formal Equivalence (Word-for-Word) | Scholarly research, rigorous biblical study, and modern liturgical readings |
| NABRE (New American) | Modified Formal Equivalence | Official liturgical lectionary readings in the Catholic Church across the United States |
| Douay-Rheims | Strict Formal Latin Vulgate Translation | Traditional Latin Mass communities, historical theology, and traditional devotions |
| Jerusalem Bible | Dynamic Equivalence (Literary Focus) | Poetic meditation, personal lectio divina, and UK lectionary proclamation |
A Catholic Bible contains 73 inspired books, including the seven deuterocanonical Old Testament books (Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and additions to Esther and Daniel), whereas Protestant Bibles exclude these texts, totaling 66 books.
Translations utilizing formal equivalence (‘word-for-word’), such as the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSV-CE) or English Standard Version Catholic Edition (ESV-CE), are widely regarded by biblical scholars as the most linguistically precise.
Traditional Christian custom and Catholic canon law advise reverently burning the worn pages in a clean container and burying the ashes in consecrated soil or a garden sacrarium, preventing the Word from suffering mundane desecration.
