Advent is the four-week penitential and expectant liturgical season that commences the Christian Church year, preparing the faithful for both the celebration of Christ’s historical Nativity and His glorious Second Coming.

Exploring the dual biblical themes of Christ’s first humble coming in Bethlehem and His final eschatological return in glory.
Advent (derived from the Latin *adventus*, meaning ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’) begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day and marks the start of the Western Christian liturgical calendar. Far from a mere secular prelude to holiday gift-giving, Advent is a sacred time of expectant longing, vigilant silence, and interior preparation. The season operates on two distinct theological planes: the first two weeks gaze forward toward Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time (Eschatology), while the final two weeks concentrate on the historical Incarnation at Bethlehem.
The visual centerpiece of the season is the Advent Wreath—a circular evergreen arrangement originating in German Christian homes and adopted universally across Catholic and Protestant sanctuaries. The continuous circle represents God’s eternity, while the evergreens signify everlasting life. The wreath holds four candles: three purple (signifying prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifice) and one rose or pink candle lit on the Third Sunday of Advent, known as *Gaudete Sunday* (‘Rejoice!’), heralding that the Nativity is at hand.
During the final eight days of Advent (December 17 to 23), ancient Christian liturgy chants the venerable *O Antiphons* during Vespers. Each antiphon invokes the Messiah under a majestic Old Testament prophetic title: *O Sapientia* (Wisdom), *O Adonai* (Lord), *O Radix Jesse* (Root of Jesse), *O Clavis David* (Key of David), *O Oriens* (Dayspring), *O Rex Gentium* (King of Nations), and *O Emmanuel* (God with Us). Embracing these ancient traditions grounds modern households in authentic spiritual depth.
| Advent Sunday | Candle Color | Traditional Virtue Focus | Biblical Scripture Anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Sunday of Advent | Purple (Violet) | Hope (The Prophecy Candle) | |
| Second Sunday of Advent | Purple (Violet) | Peace (The Bethlehem Candle) | |
| Third Sunday (Gaudete) | Rose (Pink) | Joy (The Shepherd’s Candle) | |
| Fourth Sunday of Advent | Purple (Violet) | Love (The Angel’s Candle) | |
| Christmas Eve / Day | White (Optional Center) | Christ (The Christ Candle) |
The rose candle is lit on the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday (‘Rejoice’). It marks the halfway point of the season, shifting the spiritual mood from solemn penance to joyful anticipation of the Savior’s birth.
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day (the Sunday closest to the feast of St. Andrew, November 30) and concludes at sunset on Christmas Eve, December 24.
Traditionally, the four candles represent Hope, Peace, Joy (Gaudete Sunday), and Love, culminating in the optional central white Christ Candle lit on Christmas Day.
